Supernatural Chat: When Did You Know You Were in Love?

Which asked: "Do you remember the exact moment when you fell in love with this show?"

I've talked about this before (manymany times).
I discovered the show in between S1 & S2 due to a comment online by a friend. It wasn't love at first sight for me. Took me a few episodes. What ho
oked me was the "Don't Fear the Reaper" scene from "Faith." Then what nabbed me for life was "Home". Then what sealed the deal was learning about the behind the scenes crew and how down-to-earth and fun they were. The rest is history.

When and how did you fall in love?

.

I see across the flist that today is a VERY IMPORTANT DAY.

Five years for our show--Happy Anniversary!

I'm sorry to say I was not in on the ground floor as I first started watching SPN around October 2006 (due to a remark by zelda_zee about a certain someone's lips as I document here.)  So I guess that means in just a short few weeks I will be on my fourth anniversary.

And what a four years it has been.

As many others have noted, SPN has truly impacted my life in wonderful ways.  When I was in my darkist days on the job, it was my distraction and lifeline in many ways.  It gave me amazing days of squee (Red Bull Soapbox anyone?  OMG-they-LIVE-together!!! anyone?)  It helped me to reconnect with my early love of sci-fi, monstor/horror, and genre shows/media.   It reawaken my love of photography (triggered by going to cons.)  It reawakened my love of behind-the-scenes, how-do-they-do-that/make-that-happen?   It finally gave me someone to blog about (I could never think of anything to say before!)   It got me to commit to creating art to a specified schedule!  Something I'd never, ever even thought to try before.   It even helped me to define the type of workplace I wanted to work in and the type of leader I wanted to be (Kim Manners, et al).   And most important of all, it connected me with the wonderful people in fandom.   I now "talk" with/am friends with people from all over the world.   And I've met many of them in person because of conventions.  And speaking of conventions---the high I got from attending those will be hard to surpass.

It's just a show.

Yeah I know.

But really.  It is so much more.   I cannot even begin to truly explain it to people outside of fandom.   (Other than a rare few that just "get" it even if they don't watch/get the show.)

So I will always be grateful, I guess, to Jensen's lips and zelda's referencing them in such a way that peaked my interest.

"I watched Jensen A['s] lips last night. There appears to be some sort of show built around them. Huh."

It's been a wonderful ride and I cannot wait for the next experience.

growyourwings: (SPN Is it SPN Thursday Yet?)
That was nice.  Almost as good as the day the "OMG the boys moved into together!" news hit.  Or the Soapbox Derby Day.

Not quite.  But just about as satisfying.

*sighs*  Back to RL I guess.

Is it Thursday yet?

I'm so, so behind! I need to clean off my camera photo cards and my laptop hard drive--so it's time to suck it up and process all these photos.

Lunch in Portland - or It's a Veritable Quandary

I haven't really been keeping up with Project 365. I did go to downtown Portland on March 18th and took these photos. I met a friend for lunch at a restaurant called Veritable Quandary.

Took yesterday to sleep most of the day trying to get over this cold.  Partially worked--we'll see.

Something kept going through my mind yesterday and I'm curious if I'm the only one.

I'm so totally obsessed that I kept thinking that I want a full set of the SPN books they should in the publishers scene in 4x18...

Am I the only one?

And if Dean was thrown in as well....

I had dinner tonight with a friend.  I'd told her several weeks ago, the last time we had dinner, about my ... um ... obsession  interest in SPN.  But tonight she seemed to really tune into what I was saying.  She says she wants to watch S1--but unfortunately both my copies are out on loan--but when I told her it was recently on sale and may still be--she said she'd likely just go out and buy.

She also said she might watch it tomorrow night.

Then we got a little drunk silly and we ended up envisioning this SPN viewing party for anyone who hasn't seen any or all of the episodes yet.  It would be kinda a grown up girl's slumber party--but with alcohol and the boys!  Anyone who wanted to bring air mattresses and sleeping bags could just crash.  We'd either marathon S1 and/or S2 or we'd pick the best of the best and watch episodes all the way through to season 4.

My son suggested blow-up Jensen dolls.  Since I wasn't sure I could find such a thing--we decided on life-size Jensen & Jared cut-outs on the walls.  An Impala cake.  And we could send out SPN-themed invitations.

We'll take little intermissions and play SPN fanvids.

Not sure if we'll get that crazy (hee!) but Nanc really, really wants me to do the get-together SPN party thing.  She'll crash here and we'll watch as long as we can.  Maybe I'll invite my other 2-3 friends I've been trying to get hooked.  fickleone can bring herself and anyone else she's trying to hook.

I worked from home today due to some doctor appointments.  I thought I was lucky that it just happened to be the same day as a major Apple announcement--rumored to be around iTunes 8 and iPods.

So I was working from home patiently awaiting the announcements.

And then the BuddyTV interview hit LJ.  And that's all I could think about.

I even saw an flist item float by about NBC coming back to iTunes including BSG!!!!  If this had been any other day--I would have been SO over that with like YAY!

As it is, I barely noted it.

And I STILL haven't gone out to see what Apple DID announce.

I just don't think I have the psychic energy.  Three intense days of J2 wonderfulness has completely ruined me for anything.

And I'm an Apple fangirl.

But I guess my SAA syndrome trumps Apple anyday.

I think I remember reading somewhere that someone turned hers into a mini-dress.  While it definitely wouldn't fit me, I could see how this bag could be turned into an article of clothing.  They were not kidding when they said it was HUGE.  I was thinking I could store my SPN tradiing card notebooks in it.  But they'd be LOST in there!  Definitely an SAA item.

Oh and I got the Comic Con SPN bookmark too.
growyourwings: (Default)
Just bought one--> Here.  You have to pay right away or he/she will sell the it to whomever pays first.  Perhaps I was stupid.  But the price didn't seem that bad.

What I will find out now is one of our nice flisters in attendance at Comic Con were able to grab some extras so I didn't have to buy one.  But I didn't want to take that chance.  And $24.95 (without shipping) didn't seem that bad for an item that would probably go quickly.  Again..probably stupid.  And definitely SAA-worthy.

growyourwings: (Jensen thumbs-up)
I just pre-ordered it at Amazon here.

Man I hope they do a good job.

These pics below ARE NOT associated with the new book -- just some I cruised from the web.

...and back to SPN thanks to [personal profile] mrsr58 who keeps me on the SAA bandwagon.  She just posted a link to this great article about SPN and Comic Con...

Faithful Followers of Cult TV
  [that's us!]

Some SAA-pertinent parts of the article..

On the mainstream-entertainment radar, the CW network's “Supernatural” is just a blip, a scrappy little TV show that is routinely clobbered in the Thursday-night ratings by “Grey's Anatomy” and “CSI.”

...

In the ever-expanding fan universe, the TV shows that make the most noise are often the ones most viewers have never heard of.

“I think the fact that we are not an out-of-the-box hit actually helps,” said “Supernatural” creator Eric Kripke. “Everyone feels like they're in on this very, very cool, wonderful thing that the general public doesn't know about. It makes them feel like insiders, and who doesn't want to feel that way?”

...

Comic-Con is sold out, with more than 124,000 people expected to attend.   [um...just....wow...all those people]

...

[and more on the SAA obsessiveness...]

How much more? How about subscriptions to “Smallville” or “Stargate Atlantis/Stargate SG-1” magazines, just $39.95 for six issues a year? Or $47.99 for a “Firefly” hoodie? Or tickets to star-studded conventions dedicated to “Supernatural” or “Battlestar Galactica,” where deluxe-admission packages can run as high as $439 for the weekend? (Parking and hotel fees not included.)

And YES!!!! for the below   \O/

Really. In the extreme-fan universe, the diffuse love of 16 million “Grey's Anatomy” viewers can't hold a candle to the laserlike beam of the nearly 3 million devoted who watch the underpromoted, overlooked “Supernatural.”.

We just RULE.

Ok, this whole article is just terrific GO READ IT HERE.

I'll just end with this description of US, the devoted fans...

“They are very clued in to things that are new. They are early adopters, and they are computer literate and computer savvy.”

[personal profile] missyjack    just posted this in her LJ linking to an Amazon listing for "In the Hunt" a meta by fans(?) and Sera Gamble(?) on Supernatural! I just pre-ordered. No idea when it's available. I just posted a comment to [personal profile] missyjack    asking when it's supposed to be out. A good addition to my SPN collection.

In the Hunt: Unauthorised essays on Supernatural (BenBella Smart Pop Series)

A relative newcomer to the paranormal-teen drama scene, the hit TV show Supernatural has already developed a rabid and deeply committed fan base since its debut in the fall of 2005. When their dad mysteriously disappears, brothers Dean and Sam Winchester join forces to bring him home and are pulled headlong into the world he knew best—one full of demons, spirits, monsters, and ghouls. Featuring essays from three lucky fans as well as leading writers and pop culture experts, this insightful anthology sheds light on a variety of issues, including why such a male-centric show has such a large female fan base, “Wincest” and homoeroticism, how Supernatural can be interpreted as a modern-day Brothers Grimm, and the questionable nature of John Winchester’s parenting habits. An exclusive, behind-the-scenes interview with executive story editor Sera Gamble is also included.

I'm mean...we all know I need MORE items that relate to Supernatural!

*proudly holds up SPN SAA Card*

(And no these aren't the "real" cards, we don't have any clue know what we're doing with all that. I'm just playing again.)

And I just couldn't help myself.
I made me an SAA icon too!

[personal profile] mrsr58  I know I'm incorrible.  Sorry! *smiles sheepishly*

Oh god I don't know WHAT to do!!!

I went ahead a bid all over the place for SPN cards I didn't have.  Only went for the very low priced cards and figured if I don't get outbid, then terrific I got a low-cost card.  And if I did get outbid--also terrific cuz that's money I don't have to spend.

And, no surprise to me, I have been pretty consistently outbid as expected.

Except for two of the cards I kinda sorta wanted I'm now outbid on.  And I KNOW the right thing to do is just LET IT GO.  Because I really need to concentrate on airfare for LA Con 2009, not on these frickin' cards!

But dammit!

*I will not re-bid.  I will not re-bid.  I will not rebid."

Hey!  An SAA reference--AHBL part 1.  When Jake walks in the school house and finds the chalk board all written over "I will not kill".

(Yes M, I do plan on replying to the SAA post you reminded me about this morning.  Just got off work and am catching up.)

So I was asking for inspiration here in this post earlier.

And trustworthy bud [profile] fickleone replied and got me thinking about the boys' tattoo.

I did find (very easily--don't know why I had trouble several days ago) a version of the tattoo online.  So I think I'm going to play with it.  (If anyone liked better the "more fancy, but less SPN authentic version from the post linked above, let me know.  But I'm betting authentic is better.)

growyourwings: (Default)
[personal profile] mrsr58 (or someone) give me some phrases about SPN Addicts Anonymous.  I'm actually going to try to work up a logo and my brain is BLANK!  I need some jump-starting.

ETA:  [profile] fickleone replied in the comments and got me thinking about a logo that somehow used the boys' tattoo.  I'd started a project several days ago along the same lines, but couldn't find a decent image of the actual tattoo.  So started playing with these..

But I still think the original tattoo would be better for a logo.  I may need to re-look for one or see if I can recreate it myself.

Change of subject.

How's work growyourwings?  Not bad actually.  After my "Mr. Ugly" meltdown of the other day, I must have gotten it out of my system.  However, something interesting happened THE VERY NEXT DAY.

So we'll see.  I worked from home today--put in about 12 hours--but it was all good.  I wasn't intending on working from home--but I kept getting pulled into crisis emails/phonecalls/issues that kept preventing me from getting out the door.  Tomorrow I'm supposed to work from home to try to complete some online training.  Of course I know what I'll end up doing is more non-training work stuff.  I can never concentrate on training.  But I need it for my professional certification.

Meanwhile I feel like playing with Photoshop.  Hence the request at the top of the post.  The only problem with starting a Photoshop project this late at night is that if I get involved I may not get to sleep until 2 am.
growyourwings: (Default)
Okay so I just bought another SPN card. AND I'm bidding on a gizzion others. (I don't expect to win most of them so I'm telling myself that I won't really be spending that money.)

See new card below and then read on for the sad, sad story of my slide into addiction.

Hi, I'm growyourwings and I've been addicted to SPN since October 2006.

Previously I posted about my upcoming 2-year LJ-versary (July 23). I found SPN through LJ. I can even remember a post that triggered me to watch the show. It occurred to me that I might be able to find that post. So I went looking through my early LJ entries.

On October 31, 2006 I posted an iTunes meme listing songs on my iPod. The first song listed on this meme was Don't Fear the Reaper. I know that I didn't have that song prior to watching Supernatural.

So sometime between 7/23/06 and 10/30/06 I had started watching Supernatural.

However, I didn't make a post reference to Supernatural until November 11th with this post where I talked about Emily visiting from college and us watching several Heroes episodes together (oh the days when I still really *loved* Heroes.) In that post I mentioned:

"I'm downloading last night's BSG and the last SPN ep right now."

That's it girls. Just an "Oh BTW I'm DL'ing an SPN episode." Most of my posts (not that many in total) from July through November were either meme's, RL comments, or BSG-related. I was very addicted to BSG at the time (still am.)

Then I don't mention SPN again until December 12th when I post this. The photo ALONE with no text, but with the "music I'm listening to" saying I was listening to "Carry On My Wayward Son"

Again all my fandom-based posts were about BSG or Heroes.
.
On December 12th (OMG, TWO days in a ROW posting about SPN! Is the pattern starting?!) I posted this. My first post-rec of an SPN FanVid (for Dragonfly's Carol of the Supernatural.)

And then some more SPN Fanvid recs posted on December 22th.

I noticed that some of my posts were about either/both Emily or Bob being out of town (Bob was traveling a lot for work right then--for days on end) or about a long-term bout of bronchitis I was going through that was forcing me to stay home from work. So OBVIOUSLY, my addiction is the fault of family-deprivation (Emily & Bob) and work-deprivation due to illness.

(That's my story and I'm sticking to it.)

Finally on December 27, 2006 I mention getting my sister-in-law hooked on SPN (Hi [livejournal.com profile] fickleone   !) And about me starting to go fangirly and viral about infecting others with SPN (and also Heroes, but alas that show just didn't stand up for me over time.)

And from then on it's all over folks. I'd be hard-pressed to find an entry that doesn't mention SPN.

But that gave me some date parameters (yes, I'm a computer geek; I talk in parameters) to search [personal profile] zelda_zee   's LJ to see if I could find the post that started it all for me.

Yes Zelda infected me. She doesn't know me (other than from a few comments years ago that I posted about a couple of her LOST fics--which BTW she is the primo author of one of the BEST EVAR Jack/Sawyer/Sayid series in the history of the universe--but that's another story.  And I friended her LJ to follow not only her fic writing but also her love of Sayid--which I shared -- and still share.  At that time there was not enough Sayid appreciation going on.  See my first ever post as a sample of my Sayid love--weak though my example may be.)

So here's the paragraph that started it all for me. It's from Zelda's post of October 6, 2006 :

"I watched Jensen Ackles lips last night. There appears to be some sort of show built around them. Huh."

It was tacked onto a post about LOST (naturally). Almost as an afterthought. I had ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA WHO JENSEN ACKLES was.

I really, really, really didn't.

No clue.

But the statement made me laugh and tweeked my interest. I may even have googled him to see what he looked like. I don't remember being bowled over by him.

(I CAN'T BELIEVE I just SAID THAT!)

So some time in the following few days or weeks I Netflix'd the first disk of S1. And the rest, as they say, is history. (As my family shakes their heads in sorrow for the downfall of their beloved wife and mother.)

Just watching this.  Never heard of Ring of Endless Light.  IMDB says it was done in August 2002.  I've never been a huge fan of young Jared.  I feel pervy enough sometimes with my obsession with these boys.

I haven't watched of this yet so I don't know anything really about Jared's character in this.  But he's definitely cute and adorable as always. Perhaps his character will turn out to be a jerk.  But still---look at this.

Cute, huh?

I'm getting quite the collection of clips and videos around both the boys.  I've started files on Appearances (cons, interviews, etc.) and Actors (videos etc from other works of the SPN actors).  My Jared file now goes from 2002 (with the additional of Ring of Endless Light) to present day.  I've got either Jared clips or whole files of RoEL, Young MacGyver, Flight of the Phoenix, Cry Wolf, House of Wax (*shudders about the wax thing*), the TV Guide Sexiest Star.

For Jensen I have a bunch of files I still haven't gone all the way through of clips from Days of Our Lives, a movie(?) called Sweet Valley High, that interview taken I think during DOOL where young Jensen is riding the horse, S4 of Smallville, a clip of the Smallville cast during a trip to Puerto Rico, the teaser clips from Ten Inch Hero (man I SO want to see that movie--I really hope they show it in Chicago), clips of Jensen on Good News Weekly(?) in Australia, and Jensen's various interviews from his March 2008 Aussie trip.

Okay--I'm definitely obsessed.

Sent a rambling email to [profile] fickleone yesterday morning.  She and I have often wondered how two respectable, normal(?) mature women can get so obsessively addicted to a little-known TV show.  I was in an SPN-happy mood yesterday and did a stream-of-consciousness ramble about it..

I'm sure there's more.

Then dragonfly who did one of my all-time favorite SPN vids, Carol of the Supernatural, has done another great one called Bellum Supernatural.  Check it out!

growyourwings: (Default)
I just finished watch a bunch of clips of Jared playing Dean Forrester on Gilmore Girls. I now know why everyone seems to love Jared from this show and how they love the character of Dean Forrester. Kinda the same why I learned way everyone was so in-love with JDM playing Denny on Grey's Anatomy. Both Denny & Dean are the kind of characters that are just so likable and lovable. Jared is so great (and gorgeous--despite the young age) in GG. I now understand.
