So Fangasm is available today.   I'm still waiting on my hardcopy, but I just discovered it's also available in Kindle format.  So now I have a copy to read!  Yay!

Of course I'm EXHAUSTED from my day-job work and doing some photography work as well.  Basically holding down two jobs now.   So I am either too tired to try to read it tonight or will stay awake just to do so and then be even more tired tomorrow.  But, whatever!

Can't wait to read all this.  :)  Lynn & Kathy, I am so proud of you both.  I know this isn't your first, but it's Fangasm.   Your baby has been delivered.

And hey, I now have photos in an actual published book.  lol.   :)  (FYI, the color of the page is my personal configuration for Kindle.  Helps with my eye strain to not be staring an a blaring white page on an electronic device.)

Update:  Oh I missed this part.  Now that I'm actually reading the book, looks like I won't be going to bed anytime soon after all.  Being mentioned along side Chris and Lizz makes me smile.  I still remember talking with Lizz at one of my first ever conventions.  Everyone else was looking at the stage and the guests, and I was looking at this photographer who was taking their photos.   I was almost more interested in talking with her than hearing the guests.   It was a brief conversation.   But one I still remember.  And then of course ... Chris.  Who is just generally all around awesome.

Went down a bit of rathole today.   Came back up with this.    The addition of the lens as a last minute add.   I had been trying for a symbolic lens, but found the lens image and it just ... worked.   However, I'm not yet sure if it's overall too gimmicky.  I have a version without the lens and without the little bubble circles as well.  This is not a watermark.  Rather could be used as an icon/avatar, sticker, badge, insignia.

Random aside:   WOW Is it RAINING much??!!!

It's been a very long summer.  All kind of a blur.  I'm one of those people who gets energized by Fall.   It sparks my creative energy.   I put in likely 15 hours yesterday doing long overdue work on my photography business.  So I'm feeling accomplished and while a tad bit tired, not exhausted at all.  I think back to 2008 when I was considering launching my own business.  Photography was not on the list of potentials back then.   I felt like I was moving through sludge to try to figure out what and how and if I even wanted to do it.  And the answer kept coming back NO.

What is the line by John Lennon, "Life is what happens when you are making other plans?"   This feels something like that.  I've always loved photography.   I almost majored in it back in college, but didn't for many reasons.    Mostly (but not only) because frankly back then darkroom work bored and frustrated me.  Way too slow and cumbersome.   (Ironic now because I'm considering enrolling in a darkroom class; which would be my first since I was about 19 years old.)  I received my first camera when I was about 7 or 8 years old.  It was a Brownie.  I'm pretty sure it was this one below.  I can still remember opening the package.  When my daughter was born I was constantly taking photos of her with our Canon EOS film camera.   Bob was always telling me to stop taking photos because I was "wasting film!"  I cataloged all my negatives and marked the back of all prints with the cataloged negative reference numbers.

But still.  Doing photography on a professional basis never occurred to me in 2008.   It's been so gradual.  And while it has not been effortless.  It *feels* like it's effortless.

While I'm not done, I spent a good deal of time yesterday resolving several issues I had with my two main photography websites.  While I still have some tweaking, I'm pretty happy with them right now.  Plus all of my various sites and social media sites are not somewhat hooked together.

Quick iphone photo. This made our morning. a delivery from Kyle and Stephanie as a thank you for photographing Luke yesterday. Really sweet of them (and delicious!)  Every time someone thanks me for this I want to tell them that I should be thanking them for letting me take photos as it is my happy place.

I haven't slept much, as I feared, and am off for my graveyard shift.  I can't decide if I want it to be quiet so I don't have to deal with issues or if I want it to be busy so I can stay awake until 7am.

I'm doing a lot of self-reflection lately about careers, etc.  Still really love my job.  But I have to admit, my happy place is photography.  I'm really looking forward to Vancon.

Actually I missed the date again.  Keep forgetting.  It was July 9th, 2006 when I first signed up for an LJ account.  So 7 years now!   I didn't even know of SPN back then.  Came here because of Lost.  But found SPN a few months later.

It appears that the last time I made an LJ-versary entry was 3 years ago.   Where I wrote: "I've had 21,496 unique visits and 41,155 page views.   And while for about a half of that year I was posting a hell of a lot.  The last six months have slowed to a crawl as far as posting is concerned.    In the past four years, I've made 1,828 posts, received 9,157 comments, and made 6,204 comments.   And made great friends!"

That was back in 2010 and I was about to start my 1-1/2 year hiatus from SPN cons.  While I had purchased my first DSLR camera for the Chicon 2008 convention, I still had NO idea how to really use it.   During the 1-1/2  years I was away from conventions I started teaching myself how to really make use of the camera and to understand the technology behind the lenses.   That made all the difference in the world.

Those flowers we bought earlier in the day were catching the last rays of sun in our kitchen and I had to take out my iPhone to try to capture it.  I'm happy with the results.

Last week I posted about how I was liking the new photostream view on Flickr.  Especially when used to search for specific tags, such as seeing a wall of Jensen.

I just accidentally stumbled across a third-party Flickr app called Flickriver.   Don't know how old it is.   But when I use it to view all my Flickr photos tagged with Jensen, I get a simple, infinitely scrolling, stream of high-quality photos set on a black background.  (Click here to see the whole view.)  Less overwhelming than Flickr's new photostream gallery view.  It's a bit Tumblr-like (but without all the distracting gifs.)

TERMS OF USE

I love fandom and my photography is my way of giving back to the fandom which has contributed such fun and joy to my life.   I've made so many friends and had so many good times.  Capturing those moments and sharing them is also a source of joy for me.  I love to see my photos shared and used by fandom.

I do have some very minimal requirements for using and posting/sharing my photos.  They are easy.   Essentially anyone can use my fandom-based photos for free if the use is non-commercial.   They can use them for derivative works (aka fanart).   They can post and share them as much as desired.

All I ask is:

  • All my fandom-based photos are licensed for free use as long as it is not commercial.  The photos are licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license.

  • If you repost the photos, please leave my watermark in place on the photo.   It would be nice if you linked back to where you got the photo or just to my growyourwings livejournal site.   But just leaving the watermark in place keeps the photo attribution (creator) with the photo if it gets recopied from you.

  • If you use a photo for fanart (derivative use), you can remove the watermark if you feel it interferes with your work.  In those cases, please link back to either the post from which the photo came or to the main site (such as growyourwings.livejournal.com, www.flickr.com/photos/karencookephotography, etc.).  Btw, if you create fanart from one of my photos, I'd love to see it.  I love the creativity of fandom.  Drop me a line.  :)

  • Any fanart created with my photos inherits this Creative Commons "ShareAlike" license.  Meaning anyone else can copy, repost, or make derivative works from the fanart.

Went on a location scout today to find places to take photos.  My friend Rebekah came along.  We went to the SE warehouse district over by Water Avenue and OMSI (near 2nd & Salmon).   I really loved this location on a Sunday.  Lots of close parking.  Lots of wide streets with interesting warehouses.  Not too many people.   Railroad tracks.  I have over 100 good photos from here.  Here are a few samples.

above :: A great purple door on a warehouse.

above :: Rebekah lives in inner NE Portland and she was already aware and noticed that folks put stickers and other hand drawn "art" on the back of street sides.  I had never noticed before.  Here is one she pointed out.

above / below :: Rebekah loves to knit.  This is a hat she made.   We did not specifically go out to take her photo.  But she volunteered to be my model so I could try out backgrounds.   I shot some with her prior to her putting on the hat, but once she put that hat on, I was inspired and ended up taking a lot of photos of her.

above :: Isn't this great?  This was shot through an large glass warehouse window into an office area.  I was struck by the great old fashion fan, the stacked books and the tulips in the background.  I was not sure it would turn out as the window was highly reflective.  But it worked out great.  I'm very pleased with it.

above :: This was a great location with different textures and colors that matched so well with what Rebekah was wearing.

above :: This was taken at Oaks Park.   Which I guess is basically desserted in February.  It's a locale amusement park that has been in existence in SE Portland since 1905.  I swear you feel the ghosts of the past as you walk around when it's shut down and desserted.  I've never been there before when it's closed.  You can still walk around.  But all the rides and buildings are basically shut down other than the rollar skating rink.   It was a bit spooky actually (in a fun way.)

.

I have more photos to go through.  The light was wonderful.  :)

Mrsr58 can likely remind me the name of this location.  It's on the tip of my tongue.   We went there on the first Vancon location tour back in.... 2009?  I recall we were told at the time that the show (and others) film there a lot.   For example this was the location of the Jinn's lair in WIaWSNB.

I recognized it immediately because of this photo I shot on that location tour.    There was a crew setting up there for another show.  For whatever reason this guy was following our group around.  I turned around and spied him through the doorway and snapped the shot you see below.   It's from the same perspective as the shot above it from 8x12.

I'm getting some reactions to this shot from last night.  It was hard for me to pick between this shot and the other one I decided to share here.   But based on some comments I've gotten, I'm going to share this one as well.
