Here is one photo that I'm really proud of. Well, technically it's more than one photo, but you know what I mean. Back during Vancon 2010 I took a series of photos of Jared in one of his full body laughs. I called it Anatomy of a Laugh and posted versions of it here.

Vancon 2010 was where they used that awful magenta/violet spot on the boys during their panel. Pour guys were sweating bullets under that ~~interogation~~ light. We all complained about how awful all our photos turned out because of that bright light.

Using some techniques I learned in my last photography class, I was finally able to remove most of that magenta light from this set of photos. Plus I came up with a better composition as well.

I *really* like this photo and cannot wait for Jared to sign it. I like it so much that for the first time ever I've watermarked it big across the center just because I don't want un-watermarked versions out there.

I just love Jared's laughter. It likes up a room and everyone around him. =D

I started this series for Vancon 2009 and have added to it for each succeeding con. I had a previous autograph series from Chicon 2008 & LA 2009, but wanted something different.

I love the background for this series. However, now that the Heaven & Hell myth arch is (mostly) done, I may have to find something else for the next set of cons. I've got something in mind that I may play with.

These are all the unsigned versions. Some are better than others. In the original set I wasn't as good at finding high-res images of the actors. So the quality suffered. Plus my PS skills has gotten a little better in the past year or so. I've gotten all but a few of these signed.

Photos I took from our hotel window of downtown Vancouver. I rediscovered these photos last night while I was looking for one particular shot. At the time I took these photos I was very disappointed in them. I had just purchased a lens before this con and was trying it out for the first time during the convention. I was very disappointed in it's performance.

At the time I knew little to nothing about lenses and didn't realize I'd just purchased what was known as a "kit lens". The relatively inexpensive lenses included with many camera bodies. This was the Canon EF-S 18-55 f3.5-5.6 IS lens. I also knew nothing about how to use my camera to achieve correct exposures. So I never did anything with these photos.

Now I not only understand how to use aperture, focal length and shutter speed to get correct exposures, I know how to adjust for white balance and how to manipulate all those to achieve effects I'm after in specific lighting circumstances. I'm really looking forward to the panels this year - not having to use my flash will be wonderful.

Plus I know how to use post processing to correct bad exposures. These have been heavily post-processed to correct for all those mistakes back then. I remember trying to correct them back in the day, but the white balance error totally kicked my butt.

However, I notice I didn't have to crop most of these. I've always been pretty happy with my initial composition decisions. Not that I'd really call them decisions back then - it was more instinct.

Having relooked at these, I'm considering taking out that lens and using it for a bit before LA. The one lens my gear is now missing is a good quality wide angle. I couldn't use this kit lens inside during any of the panels as it is not fast enough. But outside it has definitely possibilities. Still have either this or this or this on my next in line wish list however.

Okay, photo-geeking out rambling done. On to the photos. I can see doing housework today is receding. I'm revisiting my location photos to see if I like those better now as well.

(part 1)

These photos are not in any particular order. Nor are these all of them. I'm randomly going through the photos picking out ones that I think I can save. The lighting at the J2 panel was really hard to photograph. At one point I went up to the guy setting up the lights to tell him they were way too bright. At first I thought he ignored me. Then he brought out a set of filters and ended up putting up a pink filter. At first I thought that would be okay. But nope. It might have been if they'd had cut the light output by about 50%. *sighs*

At one point the boys commented on how hot and bright the lights were and polled the audience, via applause, to see if we preferred them off or on. *sighs* I couldn't decide between no lights or those bright lights. If they'd only just removed about half of them. Or better, dimmed them. *sighs*

Oh well. It is what it is.

Below are the photos I was able to salvage from the J2 Breakfast. I was having lens problems at the time. That plus the placement of the microphone stands made me decide to just set my camera down and enjoy watching the boys. Especially since I didn't know when, if ever, I'd ever be back to a j2 breakfast.
