Supernatural 101

I put this together several months ago for a friend I was trying to convert to the show.  This weekend I decided to code it for online reference.  If you notice errors please let me know.

Supernatural is a show introduced on the WB (now the CW) in the fall of 2005. The creator of the show, Eric Kripke, envisioned a show that showcased American Urban Legends and Myths. The show chronicles the story of the brothers Sam & Dean Winchester. The show is in it’s third season as of January 2008.

Dean & Sam travel across the country in a 1967 classic Chevy Impala searching for their father, John Winchester, the supernatural, and the thing that killed their mother, Mary Winchester.

This show appeals on so many levels--it is a one-hour thriller movie per episode with all the creepiness and yes some of the gore of the genre.  It follows a five-year myth-arc that is intricately woven through almost every episode.  Sometimes so subtlely that you won't even see it until later shows review secrets and you find as you re-watch previous episodes there were clues just "laying around" in plain view.

It is a show that also doesn't take itself too seriously.  It pokes humor at itself, at the genre, at it's fans (which the fans love), and at the characters themselves.

But *more* than anything it is a show about family, about love, and about devotion and sacrifice.  You will come to love the brothers Winchester.  I don't love or even much like modern-day horror shows--too much blood and gore.  But this show--I love.

If anyone is an X-Files fan--you'll find similarities.  The show has some X-Files alumnae as writers/directors.  And for those of you who are Buffy or Whedon fans, you'll find a clone of Joss in Supernatural's creator, Eric Kripke, who is dearly loved by the fans.

Please note that I link to various fanvids throughout this post.  I try to note when those vids may be spoilery for certain episodes/seasons.  But I may have missed something.

Below the cut is a longish introduction to this show.  If you find yourself interested, be sure to watch Supernatural on The CW, Thursdays at 9pm.  If you start with S1 DVDs, give yourself until after the first episode of S2 before you pass full judgement on the show.  Many folks find that by mid-season 1 they are intrigued or hooked--but almost all who make it to the premier episode of season 2 are full-on addicted.

Below are links to blog articles written by fans of Supernatural. These fans have done a great job explaining what Supernatural is and why it is such a great show to watch.

This show has a great and active fandom. There are very creative folks who make FanVids.  I've found that the fanvids can perfectly summarize many aspects of this show, so I've linked to many of my favorites to introduce the show to you.  It was hard to chose "just a few."  At recent count I have over 246 fanvids in my Supernatural collection.  Please browse through the vids I link here--they are all between 1 and 3 minutes in length.  You can pick and choose or go through the entire list.

Introduction to the Show

  • Bellum Supernatural by dragonfly.  This could be considered mildly spoilery for end of S2 and first part of S3.  However I think the scenes are brief enough and out of context enough that it really isn't spoilery.  This is an excellent summary of the show in it's stride.  I would highly recommend viewing this vid as a great teaser for this show.
  • Ghostbusters: If there is any one fanvid that best overviews what this show is about in a great, professional-looking way, it's this vid. This vid was done by "Wolfpup," who is a very active Supernatural fanvidder. Many of the other vids I've included below are also hers. The song Ghostbuster just so perfectly describes the non-angst part of this show.
  • Saving People, Hunting Things…The Family Business:  This is the one phrase that summarizes what the show is all about.  A family, a couple of brothers, who sacrifice everything to save people.  They are wanted by the law, by other hunters of the supernatural, by demons…but still they give everything they have.
  • Carol of the Supernatural: Dragonfly took a Christmas song (of all things) and made a fantastic Supernatural vid. Very action-packed. Another one of my favorites.
  • A Fan's Opening Credits: Supernatural does not have traditional opening credits. A fan ran a "contest" to see who could come up with the best opening credits fanvid. There were many great ones. This is just one example
The Characters

  A bit about Dean

When Dean was four years old he went through a traumatic event. His mother was killed in a way that defied logic. On this eventful night, Dean's father placed his baby brother Sam in his arms and told Dean to run and take care of Sammy. That command and this event defined Dean's character.

Dean is a devoted son and brother. He places their welfare above his own at all times. He believes it is his responsibility to take care of this family, to keep the family together, and most importantly, to "save" Sammy. Dean is definitely "Anything But Ordinary." The one thing to remember about Dean is don't hurt Sam, or you will not live to see the next sunrise. He will do anything to protect Sam.  Dean is the Han Solo of Supernatural.

Some FanVid expositions on the character of Dean:

  • As introduced in the vid "Bitch" by Wolfpup Dean is an enigma. He is devoted to his family, to hunting the thing that killed his mother, and while doing so, hunting and killing any other SOB supernatural creatures in the process and saving others while doing so. He is brave, devoted, anguished, a womanizer that loves women, and a law-breaker.  All the in name of fighting the supernatural and saving people.
  • In the Driver’s Seat” by ChevyGirl shows Dean’s love for the one constant in his life other than his dad and brother, his Baby—the Impala.
  • Anything But Ordinary” by Tara.  In the Season 1 episode “Bug” Dean tells Sam that he could never live in an ordinary neighborhood; that it would freak him out.  The audio quality on this vid is not good—but the lyrics fit Dean very well.
  •  “Secret Agent Man” by Wolfpup—a tongue-in-cheek vid showing the hero in Dean.
  • Dean's Overture.  A day in the life of Dean Winchester.  A Dean action/humor/trailer vid to William Tell Overture
  • Nemo.  A vid about a hero's anguish and journey.  Contains spoilery clips from season 1 finale, season 2 premier and season 2 finale.

A bit about Sam

Sam wants a "normal" or at least "safe" life. Since he was a baby all he knows is living on the road in run-down hotels and attending school on a periodic basis. Every time he made friends in school he had to say goodbye and move on.

Sam is smart and excels at academic pursuits. He won a scholarship to Stanford to study pre-law and after a few years passed his LSAT with high marks to get into law school.

While Sam loves his father, he constantly fights with him. Early in the show he doesn't understand or accept why his father is so obsessed with finding the thing that killed his wife and Sam & Dean's mother. Sam feels like he never had his father's approval. Sam is what would be considered a "perfect" kid in a normal world. In the world of this family's life however, Sam is the "rebel"; constantly fighting against the crusade his father is on.

Sam is devoted to his brother Dean, but had to leave the family to pursue his dream of a normal life. As Sam gets pulled back into the world of his brother & father's hunt for the supernatural, he begins to understand that he is more than a "perfect" kid; he has a special destiny that is somehow wrapped up with what killed his mother and why his mother was killed.

Eric Kripke, the creator of Supernatural, has called Sam the Luke Skywalker of Supernatural.  After being reluctantly dragged back into the family business he becomes as obsessed as his father was in hunting down the demon that killed his mother.  He is haunted by what the demon and the hunt has done to himself, his family, and his brother.

  • The vid “Perfect” by Clex Studios shows the strained relationship between Sam and his father.  (Contains spoilers for the Season 1 finale.)
  • Pieces of a Dream by LSketch42 (another excellent Supernatural FanVidder) shows how Sam mourns the loss of the normal life he craved.  (Contains spoilers for the Season 1 Pilot.)
  • Shine--on a more happy note.  Sammy has the best smile in the world and when he's not emo'ing around his smile just shines.
And, of course, the Metallicar

What can you say about the Impala (aka Metallicar)? It is considered by many to be the third main character in the show. The Impala is a classic 1967 black Impala that is owned by Dean. Dean’s father originally owned it, but now it is Dean’s “Baby.”

The only thing that Dean loves more than the Impala is Sam (and his father.) However, even Sam is not allowed to drive the Impala that often; and Sam had better *never* damage the Impala.

The editors and producers of the show do an outstanding job weaving shots of the Impala into the story lines. You can often tell the mindset of Dean by the condition of the Impala. Frequently the Impala is pristine and shiny black. However, on occasion you will see a dusty, dirty Impala--which usually means that Dean is going through some kind of crisis; either internally or externally.

There is one impressive shot (above) that shows the Impala looming in the foreground "protecting" Dean while Dean is in the background, his back turned to the camera, making an anguished phone call to his father. In that episode ("Home") Dean is revisiting his childhood home where his mother died and he is lost in spirit and scared and tries to contact his father for help.

Later in Season 2 you actually see Dean beat up on his baby due to his extreme anguish at that point in the series.

  • The “Metallicar Tribute” vid by ClexStudios shows Dean’s baby in all her glory—scenes are set to the hard-rock music Dean so loves.  Contains a spoiler scene from the finale of season 1.
  • The Drive vid by Reese shows great shots of the Impala throughout the series—showing off the impressive cinematography that is so loved by the fans.  (Note:  I'm trying to re-find this vid online somewhere--if anyone knows where it can be located, please let me know.)
  • The Back in Black vid is actually from the show itself--from the episode "Bloodlust" in Season 2. Dean had been without his car for a few episodes and in the beginning of this episode he has her back and this clip shows his joy in being back with his "baby."
  • Finally the Impala Bang Bang vid makes you smile if you know how much Dean loves his car. And how much the fans love the car as well.
This Show is About

Family Devotion and Brothers

While the show seems to be all about monsters, creatures, and gore.  The fact is that the central point of the show is the Winchester family.  Especially the brothers Sam & Dean.  I do not like horror movies or TV shows.  But I love this show—and it’s all because of the boys and their devotion to one another.

  • Now I Run: This vid is really about Dean, however it also demonstrates the love Dean, Sam, and John (their father) have for each other. This vid is all about how Dean idolizes his father and wants to support him and be like him. Dean wants (and has) his father's approval. Dean is the consummate "hunter" of the supernatural and he learned everything he knows from his father.
  • I'll Stand by You: This vid is all about the devotion between the two brothers. How through thick and thin they both know they can depend on each other. While all Sam really wanted was a normal life (see below in "A Little about Sam"), he is totally devoted to his brother Dean, recognizes all Dean does for him and how much Dean is hurting and wants to reassure Dean that Sam will be there to help and support and love him.
  • Suffer in Silence.  A vid showing how Sam is there to support Dean.  Very Dean-centric angst.  Again by Wolfpup.
Sacrifice

“I’ve given everything I’ve had.” says Dean in the opening of Season 2 in “In My Time of Dying.”  In the episode “What Is and What Should Never Be” Dean asks his father why they have to sacrifice everything to save other people.  During the progress from Season 1 to Season 3 both Sam & Dean make choices and do things that makes them question themselves and their quest.

  • Animal I Have Become by Wolfpup demonstrates the toll the hunt and the life has taken on both the boys.  The things they do and see have pushed them to extremes.
  • The Storm by Wolfpup.  This vid centers on Dean and his devotion to his brother Sam.
The Monster of the Week & Urban Legends

Eric Kripke, the creator of Supernatural, had a vision of a show based on American Urban Legends and myths.  Supernatural is the result.  Each show has a “Monster of the Week” and/or an Urban Legend such as Hookman, Bloody Mary, the Woman in White, etc.

  • Thriller: This vid takes the Michael Jackson song and shows another piece of what Supernatural is all about--the "monster of the week." It's about hunting those creatures.
  • Evil Does Exist:  This is a fan-made trailer submitted to the CW network for a fan contest.  This winning fanVid was aired on the network to advertise the show.  (Note:  The should is out of sync in the intro by creator Eric Kripke, however, the fanVid part of the YouTube clip is good for sound, so just wait until after Kripke.)
Hunting

Sam and Dean spend their lives hunting down the supernatural and saving people.  Here are a few FanVids that show our boys in action.

  • Kick, Shoot, Fight.  Sam & Deans father John was an ex-marine.  After Mary was killed and John began to hunt the supernatural and search for her killer, he put his sons through basic training—for most of their lives.  As a result, Sam & Dean can out-kick, out-shoot, out-fight just about anyone.
  • Not Dead Yet: This is one of my top favorite FanVids. It uses a Styx song to demonstrate how, no matter how hard the "baddies" try, Dean and Sam are still alive and kicking. I grew so obsessed with the vid and its song that I drove my kids nuts listening to the song over and over (and over and over) again. It very quickly moved to the top of my most-played list on my iPod. Another Wolfpup masterpiece.
  • Supernatural Five-O:  The boys use many kinds of disguises in the process of tracking down the supernatural.  A great deal of the time they will impersonate local or federal officials.  This is a tongue-in-cheek play on the old Hawaii Five-O television series and Supernatural.
The Myth-Arc

While it is not readily apparent in the first half of Season 1, this show follows a multi-season long myth arc.  There are 2 types of episodes.  The Monster of the Week (MOTW) episodes which are pretty standalone.  Then there are Myth-Arc episodes that build on the overall storyline.  The pattern tends to be 3 MOTW episodes and then 1 Myth-Arc episodes.

Most devoted fans did not become so until between mid-Season 1 and the end of Season 1.  The gradually building Myth-Arc and the relationship between the brothers slowly gets its hooks into you around the episode called “Faith” and builds from there.  Most fans didn’t even realize they were hooked until the Season 1 finale (which was an OMG type of finale.)

Humor & Popular Culture

While Supernatural is all about fighting the Monster Of the Week, hunting the thing that killed the Mary Winchester, and the major boy-angst, Kripke and his writers offset the darkness with humor.  Humor is laced throughout each show.  In addition there is at least one episode per season that is all out crack-humor.  Kripke is a huge fan of science fiction and horror movies and television and has both explicit and obscure references through the episodes.  The fanVidders also frequently create vids that point out both the sometimes cliché aspects of the show.  I’ve included links to some of these.

  • The Official Supernatural Drinking Game: Devoted Supernatural fans found this vid to be hilarious! I mean how can you go wrong with polka music? It plays on the idiosyncrasies of each of the boys and the show. This vid just about went viral on YouTube. Last I checked it had over 196,000 views. Pretty impressive considering that Supernatural is a "cult" hit; not a mainstream hit.
  • Supernatural Menace: Someone took a Star Wars teaser for the Phantom Menace and used it for Supernatural. Amazingly apt for the story line of Supernatural. Casting the Supernatural character of Missouri as Yoda was especially apt!  Kripke has compared Dean & Sam to Han Solo and Luke Skywalker—so this is a fan tribute to that as well.
  • Macho Man: Just funny. A tongue-in-cheek tribute to the boys' hotness.
  • Batman and Boy Blunder:  In Season 3 the episode “Bad Day at Black Rock” has Sam & Dean affected by both extremely good and then bad luck.  At one point Dean has amazingly good luck in fighting the bad guys and with a self-satisfied, smirk says, “I’m Batman.”  A vidder went with this concept and did a parody of Supernatural using techniques used the old time Batman TV series.  Fans frequently refer to Sam as having “puppy-dog” eyes when he’s “emoting”—the vidder also played off of that by using the “How Much is that Doggy in the Window” song.  All clips used in this vid is from the “Bad Day at Black Rock” episode.
A little bit spoilery

There are some fantastic FanVids out there that you may not want to watch if you don’t want to be “spoiled” for certain episodes and/or storylines.  However, I couldn’t resist including some of my favorites.  Watch only if you do not mind be spoiled.

  • Nightshifter Ending: Spoilery for Season 2 episode titled "Nightshifter." This shows the last three minutes of that episode. It is a great example of how the producers of the show weave in classic rock songs into the story; both to tell the story and to enhance the story. The clip shows how the boys "get away" at the end of the episode.
  • Stranglehold (Very Spoilery): Very spoilery for the season finale of Season 1. It is the opening "here's what happened last in Supernatural" clip from the premier of Season 2. It shows the final event of Season 1 at one point in the clip. But the clip also is great for summarizing Season 1. So the decision to watch it all depends on how much you care about knowing what the cliffhanger for Season 1 is.
  • Haunted:  This vid is VERY spoilery for the Season 2 finale.  But it is so well done that I had to recommend it here.  It achingly demonstrates that Dean cannot survive without his brother Sam.
And about the cast

The primary cast members of Supernatural are Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki.  I’ll let you look them up online for more details on their careers.  However, I had to mention the one additional reason why fans have become so devoted to this show.  Because of these two men.  They are genuinely nice individuals.  They are both from Texas although they did not meet until the auditions for Supernatural.  They do not have Hollywood egos and are committed and hard-working.  The show is filmed in Vancouver, BC and during the season the boys work 5-6 days a week usually for 12-15 hours a day.  Frequently in rainy or snowy weather.

In addition, crew members, writers, and producers have all commented on the chemistry between the two.  While each are great alone, the combination of the two is something magic.  They’ve both said that they’ve started to consider themselves brothers in real life as well as on screen.

Some quotes that demonstrate their friendship:

  • "Well, I'm living alone, but I'm planning to get a dog...Until then, I coexist with Jared's dogs, I've almost adopted them." –Jensen.  (Jared has two dogs that Jared is mad-in-love with.)
  • Jared: “He’ll give massages a lot of the time when I get tense.” Jensen: "He gets tense a lot” (Said in jest during an interview.)
  • "In the last three years of my life, I've spent more time with Jensen Ackles than with any other human being and vice versa." –Jared
  • "You know, they have such a... special relationship, I'm not sure I can - you know, they're just so close!" - Lauren Cohen (a cast member in Season 3.)
Here is one FanVid (among many that exist—just enter Jensen Jared into YouTube) that tries to show the friendship between them.

Wow if you lasted through all that--you're definitely either a Supernatural fan already or you are a prime candidate.  Go watch some--Thursdays, 9pm on the CW.
