I took my daughter to this new restaurant I discovered last week through a friend of mine. It's located in the Sellwood area of SE Portland.
When I was there the first time with my friend Barbara, I did take photographs, but never got around to posting them.
I posted previously about my visit to the NW 23rd Ave area of Portland. The Sellwood area reminds me a little of the NW23rd area. However, it's not quite as ... yuppified ... yet, that is. I can see that changing.
The restaurant we visited was The Jade Teahouse and Patisserie on SE 13th.
From their website:
" We are unlike any teahouse you've ever visited. Jade is the story of the blending of very distinct cultures. East and West, Indochine; French colonial Vietnam. A unique cuisine grew from France's 70 plus years in Vietnam. We are inspired by this and our unique menu draws on both cuisines."
I *LOVED* this place. Emily did too. The owner makes special tea blends. I've tried a couple of them and I loved them both. Emily doesn't even like tea but when she tried mine she said she really liked it.
Plus the food! I had a Wide Wheat Noodle dish with a hot sauce, Emily had Sesame Beef with Sticky Rice. The Sticky Rice was flavored with coconut milk and was mildly sweet and fantastic. The last time I was there my friend Barbara had a chicken curry dish that was also really good.
Emily and I finished with a Black Rice Pudding.
The restaurant offers free WiFi and you could see some patrons were there to hang out, have tea, and work or study. I enjoyed sitting and watching the Sellwood foot traffic. It was an eclectic mix of business and hippie and families.
For Project 365 for that day, I give you some photos from the Sellwood area and inside the restaurant...

1) The first two photos are random street shots from the Sellwood area. I didn't get out on foot much, so these were taken when I was at a red stoplight!

2) Too bad I don't still have young children--or know anyone who does. I loved the name of this store Haggis McBaggis. It's a children's shoe and clothing store.

3) Here's the restaurant (above). And the photos below are of the inside.

Earlier in the day that I went out with Barbara, we visited Spirit Feathers, a local "woo-woo" store. It had just changed ownership and we were the new owner's first customers!
I bought some Oregon Opal earrings and another Ocean Jasper piece. I also bought the bells you see in the photos below. They are two bronze bells attached by a leather cord. When the bells strike each other they make this great ringing noise. The bells are flat and decorated with dragons.
