growyourwings: (CHEER Take your shoes off)
Not gonna commit to a photo a day.   But have a mind to potential try it again.

Photos from 1.1.2013.  The frost left some leaf imprints on our side deck in the brillant winter sunshine.

And from today's early morning drive through downtown Portland.  On the Burnside Bridge and on Burnside.  These are all iPhone photos.

One of the allures of Tumblr I think is that you appear to get a lot more response to posts.   Tumblr enables a quick "like" and reblog function which can get your posts spreading around a lot via people you don't know.  As I've been playing more in Tumblr and thinking about the LJ vs. Tumblr comparison, I've begun to think that for those of us who are not fandom's writers, but it's visual artists, Tumblr may offer a bit more feedback satisfaction.   And then there's the fact that for whatever reasons, Tumblr is so much more active for SPN than LJ seems to be these days.   Even if the activity might be a bit OTT or youngish or whatever or Cas vs. Sam focused - at least people are reacting and talking - as opposed to the silence that seems to have descended over LJ.

Don't get me wrong, I still see LJ as my fandom homebase.   My real community.   I'm just venturing out further and exploring and bringing back.  :)

Tumblr is not the place for in depth conversations or getting to know-you's.    I am seeing that relationships form there and perhaps it's just a matter of getting used to the different behavior of Tumblr, but it still does seem to me to as good as LJ for forming a more "connected" community.

But there is something to be said for finding two of my photos on Tumblr with more likes/reblogs than I've ever seen on LJ.

I did not go back to verify this, but I'm pretty sure this photo below is an enhanced version of the one I uploaded.  It appears to have been "Tumblrized" with increased saturation and color filters.

This last one is particularly satisfying as it has nothing to do with SPN, but yet got 98 likes/reblogs.

So as I've been playing around on Tumblr, I've begun to customize the two Tumblr blogs that I set up many months ago.

I've set one up as growyourwings to use for general purpose and fandom stuff and which I will use for reblogging.

And I took the first one I set up ages ago and renamed it to Karen Cooke Photography where I will only post my own original work and not reblog.

In order to keep these straight in my head I'm determined to keep the themes different.   I just love the theme I have on the growyourwings blog.

Of course I also have my own domain, GlimpseOfaMoment.com, for which I am currently using Wordpress.  And while I really loved that Wordpress theme when I set it up, I'm currently very enamored of these Tumblr sites.

At the recommendation of Mrsr58, Bob and I took the time to go the Mission District early Saturday afternoon.   It was a very interesting to walk through the streets and alleys and see all the artwork.

Slowing working through photos from the SF trip.  Our hotel, the Serano, was in the Theatre district and just a couple blocks away from Union Square.  We were on the top floor (17th floor) with a corner room that had fantastic views.  I took these photos on the evening when we arrived.  The sunset was fantastic.

Here is an HDR photo merge of 11 photos taken without a tripod from our hotel window of the sunset over San Francisco.  HDR is not everyone's cup of tea, but I wanted to play.  You can see all the weird reflections from the hotel window as well as the camera lens from the intense sunset, which was amazing.  I have non-HDR versions as well, but as I said, I wanted to play.

Bed now, methinks.

We arrived back home this afternoon from our 25th wedding anniversary trip to San Francisco.  I'm very tired. We had a wonderful time.  More details later.  I wasn't going to look through the photos I took since I was so tired.  But that didn't last long.  I have to go to work early tomorrow so I really need to stop.  I haven't even finished transferring the files from my camera.  I'm a bit overwhelmed by all the great photos.  It's been a long time since I've been so inspired by a trip.  I think even Hawaii did not inspire me as much as this trip.

Yesterday late afternoon Bob and I were driving through a water bird marshland as the sun was starting to go down.   Here is a random sample of what we saw.  This is a pelican caught in flight with the setting sun shining from behind.  You can see pellets of water falling off the pelican as he had just dove into the water to catch something.   Click to enlarge.

When I got to some images of snowy egrets fishing in the marsh with colors ranging from magentas to oranges to blues to greens.  I had to stop.  I just didn't even know what to do, the images overwhelmed me so much.

Very slowly going through my Thursday Vancouver sightseeing photos.   Taking another break.   I have also gone through my daughter's photos from her sightseeing and they are wonderful.   I may post some of those later as well.

Here are a couple photos from Stanley Park looking over the water to the city.

Ok the next series of photos was an experiment.  I was very tired and wasn't caring so much about HDR output.  So I played a bit of Russian roulette with the HDR tool just to see what it would do.   Below you can see the before and after images.

While I like the HDR version to a certain extent.  I think I prefer the original.

I thought the HDR version was interesting, but the more I look at it, the less I'm liking it.

Ok, I think I'm done for the day.  Doesn't seem like I did much photo-wise, but there was a lot of culling and editing going on behind the scenes.  My eyes are crossed.

Here is one of the photos that overwhelmed me.   I took several exposures, albeit hand-held, so I could attempt to HDR them.   Here is one shot done in HDR two different ways.   I'm leaning more towards the photorealistic version.   I have several other shots of this scene and plan on developing them in different ways to see which I prefer.

above :: HDR of morning shot of Vancouver BC looking from Stanley Park.  This one was developed more photorealistically.

Photobucket

above :: same shot, developed more surrealistically.  As I said up top, I'm leaning towards the first version.  But surrealistic HDR photos can be fun to play with.

Still haven't gotten back to those overwhelming Vanc BC photos.

But here are some more of the hotel at night.

I swear Vancouver BC has got to be one of the most beautiful cities.   I'm just now getting to my photos from around town and HAD to stop because I was just overwhelmed by the sheer beauty I was seeing.

While I walk away for a bit, here's one photo that shows that beauty.  It's the view of the city from our hotel window.  Click to enlarge.

I'm taking a break from the typical con photos.  Need to clear my head.  I think I'm going to concentrate on photos I took of the city and surrounding areas.   I'm starting with photos I took early one evening of the Sheraton where the convention was held.

I've previously posted photos of the hotel that I took at previous cons.  These are photos from our room in 2010.  We had a great view of the church and hotel courtyard.   My tags indicate that these photos here are from 2009.  The first three photos are of the hotel; the others are of the downtown area.

All of these photos were taken about 9ish at night.  I think on a couple of different nights.   All taken as our group returned to the hotel after dinner in the downtown area.

Photobucket

above ::  I *love* this hotel.  But HOMG is it expensive.    This shot shows the escalator in front of the front desk leading up to the 3rd floor where the convention registration and photo op areas were.  Of all the places we've had to wait in line for stuff, this is the most pleasant.  There are great views our the glass windows.   I think I took some shots during registration and other line-up times, so perhaps once I rediscover them, I may post some.

Photobucket

above :: the hotel has two towers.  This is the North Tower.  The convention hall is in the basement of this tower.

Photobucket

above :: the view looking over toward the back of the hotel from the fountain courtyard.

Photobucket

above :: the apartment/condo building you see in the background is the view we had this time from our hotel room.   Downtown Vancouver really loves their glass and steel high-rise buildings.   When I saw them in 2009 (I was in Vanc BC in 1984, but I don't recall the skyline of the city from that visit) at first I found them jarring somehow.  However, now I really like their appearance.

Photobucket

above ::  This Mom and her kid (I assume) were taking photos of each other.  I offered to take some of the two of them with her camera; which I did.  Later when I reviewed my photos I saw that I had also captured them in some of my shots.  I really like how they add to the image.

Photobucket

above :: cutie.

Photobucket

above :: Here you can get a bit more appreciation of the height of the North Tower (on the left).  The South Tower is on the right.  I believe Jensen used to live in the South Tower during the first season or two.

Photobucket

above :: More of the North Tower height.   I think I was better able to get the height in the 2009 photos I linked to above.

Photobucket

above  ::   The moon was out as we returned one evening.  I had to play around a lot with the ISO settings to try to get the moon as defined as possible.  The hotel South Tower is in the foreground.
