Copied/pasted from FB post just now. Random memories.
Seeing Bob Singer, the SPN executive producer/director/writer, was extra special. He wasn't scheduled to be at the con. He came on Sunday to auction off 2 copies of the S8 production set books (done each year by Jerry Wanek showcasing the sets for the seasons). We rarely EVER get writers, directors, or producers at the cons (long story why). So having THE Bob Singer there was a special and rare treat (who knows maybe unlike Kripke, we didn't scare him off and he will be back.) I feel so fortunate to have been at both the cons where Singer and Kripke came. After the J Panel, Bob stuck around and I was able to get his autograph in my SPN book. The girl in front of me engaged Bob in a rather long question (about which I cannot recall) that was a bit of an awkward young geek moment. Bob handled it really well though. Then when I had my moment I spent too much time "instructing" Bob on where to sign and what pen to use. *facepalm* At one point my internal voice went, "Karen SHUT-UP and stop directing BOB SINGER." He was very gracious. I thanked him for coming and told him it was a treat to have him there. I wish I had take a moment to ask for a photo with him. But after the previous fan's encounter with him, I didn't want to go too fangirl on him. I loved seeing Bob up on stage with the Js talking about the show.
We also had the rare treat of seeing Robbie Thompson, SPN writer. Most SPN writers stay in LA, but Robbie came up to see his episode being shot. Robbie created Felicia Day's character, Charlie. More than one person said Charlie was loosely based on Robbie's own personality. Robbie could not do a panel since there are contractual reasons why SPN writers are not allowed to do so. But he was introduced several times and got up on stage briefly, so I was able to get his photograph. Unfortunately I wasn't lucky enough to find him afterwards to get his autograph.
I also missed out on meeting Jerry Wanek. Due to my neck injury I skipped a couple of panels and rested in my room as much as possible. Which mean I didn't go with my friends for drinks/dinner one evening where I guess they ran into Jerry and got to chat with him for a bit. It was telling that even after I learned this during the con, I didn't have any regret about it as I was still in pain. Now that I'm more recovered, the regret has surfaced a bit. But it was unavoidable and luck of the draw. So I'm basically pretty zen about it.
Also due to the injury we left Vancon a day earlier than planned so I missed out on the fan meetup with the VFX crew. Again, no regrets at the time due to pain. But now, I wish it could have been otherwise.
Another highlight was my daughter Emily getting to chat for 5-10 minutes on 2 different days with Felicia Day. And getting to say hi to Felicia myself during our photo op. And seeing Felicia on stage and getting to photograph her. Felicia was a great panel guest. One of us.
I still have several panels of photos to process. And the photo ops. And I'm going to Burcon in 3 months so I have less time to get through them. And I'm off to Wisconsin and Minnesota in 2 weeks (for work and to visit with my cousin Christine.) Despite the unfortunate occurrence of the car accident with this Vancon, it really was an extra special treat. I went determined not to sign up for next year. Guess what. I signed up for next year.
