High on a Butte

Bob and I went walking up on Powell Butte this afternoon. It's about 3 miles from our house and has some great views.

Many years ago I used to drive up here on my way to work each morning--very early--and walk around before I went into work. It was usually wet (it's Oregon after all) and very often no one else was around.

above :: I have this thing for doors. Can't resist taking photos of even the grungiest of them. In fact I tend to like it when they are grungy. This is red paint worn through the white--kinda looks like something from Supernatural, doesn't it?

above :: the butte used to belong to some farmer decades ago (if I recall correctly), there are old orchard trees all over. Very knarly.

The butte is a nature park now. On days when there are not as many people around you can see all kinds of birds and wildlife roaming around. There are lots of trails--all just yards away from a busy suburb.

above :: you can see Gresham in the distance.

above :: all the fencing is new--but I like it.

above :: meadowlane trail .. where you can see lots of birdlife on quiet days.

above :: the top of the butte where most of the old orchard trees are.

above :: you can't see it in this photo--but there was a great view of St. Helens here.

above :: love, love, love knarly trees.

above :: Mt. Hood

above :: this photo sucks. But just as Bob and I were leaving the park I looked up and there was this gigantic old poplar tree. I don't think I've ever seen a poplar with such a huge trunk. I called out to Bob and said, "LOOK at THAT!" Bob went kinda "whoa." It was behind the fence so I couldn't get closer and all my photos of it sucked. But it was a very interesting tree.
