Someone at work shared this with me (since I was talking so much about the *trauma* of sending Emily off to college—yes Emily I do miss you.)

Follow this link and then page down about 1/3 – ½ down the page until you see BELOIT COLLEGE'S MINDSET LIST® FOR THE CLASS OF 2010.

A few thoughts on the list….

  • Some of the items I didn’t understand at all--probably showing my age
  • “Television stations have never concluded the broadcast day with the national anthem.” (This is one I was trying to explain to Tim just the other day; he didn’t get the concept that there were times of the day when TV just wasn’t *on*.)
  • “A stained blue dress is as famous to their generation as a third-rate burglary was to their parents'.” (Ha! What a difference)
  • “Madden has always been a game, not a Superbowl-winning coach.” (This explains so much to me. I would occasionally see online references to Madden on eBay—I couldn’t understand why they were selling a football coach!)
  • “They have always been able to watch wars and revolutions live on television.” (And live coverage of a slow-moving white van on a California freeway being “chased” by cops--an ex-football player accused of murdering his wife. Hours of riveting news coverage.)
  • “They have always preferred going out in groups as opposed to dating.” (Emily is this true?)
  • “They have never put their money in a "Savings & Loan." (Or heard of green stamps?)
I think they left out:

  • Never knowing what it was like to have a major family event being the showing of Wizard of Oz on television (it only happened once a year!) Or seeing It’s a Charlie Brown Christmas *only* on the exact day/time a network (CBS?) broadcast it.
  • Never having someone tell them, “It’s *long-distance* make the conversation quick!”
  • What’s a “rotary dial?”
  • Having “albums” or "records" instead of CDs (and now MP3s). Making sure the needle doesn’t scratch the record. Having to turn over the record to listen to the rest of the songs. Having to listen to *all* the songs, in the exact order on the record, without getting up and lifting and re-positioning the needle.
  • Having to get up to change the TV station
  • Never had milk delivered to their door-stop. “What is a milkman?” I think one of our neighbors when I was a kid was a milkman—can’t remember who or where—but I have some vague memory of that.
  • 24x7 used to be a math problem
  • "MySpace" meant leaving someone alone--"give me my space!"  Not putting your whole existence, internal & external online for the world to see.
