I decided to record my thoughts on how I think Season 4 may end.
I'm completely spoiler free except for the name of the last episode (which I will name here). Depending upon your place in spoiler-ville you may want to close this now if you'd rather not even read speculations about the end of the season.

Okay so yesterday I learned that the last episode is titled "Lucifer Rising." I didn't verify this because I don't even want to go near any online site that might spoil me. But the symmetry with Lazarus Rising makes sense.
By the way--have we ever had an update on how many seals have been broken? Has Lilith broken that many?
So last night we saw a few things:
1. Sam is a demon blood junkie. While his reasons for starting may have been good, it seems it's somewhat out of his control now.
2. There is something "different" now about Sammy. Something that psychics (Pamela) and angels (Anna) can see.
3. We had about ten thousand references to something being "in the blood" around Jimmy the Vessel and his daughter also the vessel.
4. We saw Bobby and Dean lock Sam up "for your own good" in the panic room. Also saying that Sam is "the demon problem." A room that is impervious to any demon entry and, I assume, from which a demon could also not leave if it was locked inside.
5. We know that any demon or angel on SPN cannot manifest on Earth without a host/vessel body.
6. We know that the last episode (is it a two-parter?) is called "Lucifer Rising". Which, I assume, means we actually end the season with Lucifer escaping hell and coming to Earth.
So my speculation is that Lucifer will break free at the very end of the last episode and his host/vessel body will be Sam.
Why?
1. Sam's body has been prepared to be the vessel for Lucifer by Ruby's blood. I now think that Ruby is a manipulative, lying b*tch who has always been on the side of raising Lucifer. I may be wrong here. Perhaps she does have good intentions and she was also somehow manipulated into getting Sam to drink her blood. But either way--evil!Ruby or good!Ruby--Sam's body has been prepared/changed. Plus all those references last night to something in the "blood" making a body available to become a vessel.
2. While some are speculating that Sam has been locked up to detox him--which could be true--I think it's because Bobby and Dean (likely Bobby figured it out and told Dean)--have worked this all out and are locking Sam up in the Panic Room to "protect him" from being possessed by Sam. Hmmm. I just realized that Sam has that Devil's Trap seal tattoo. Perhaps the ending episode will cut/break that somehow. At first, while I still thought Sam would be possessed by Lucifer, I thought they locked Sam up so that Lucifer would be trapped in the Panic Room when he possessed Sam. But now I think it's to try to prevent the possession in the first place.
3. If my speculation is true it is a great vehicle for the continuation/escalation of the Sam vs. Dean story into Season 5 (meep!) However it wouldn't be real!Sam vs. Dean but rather Lucifer!Sam vs. Dean (working with Castiel and of course Bobby). It would also explain Castiel/Misha's increased presence for next season.
4. It also kinda circles back into a Dean must save Sammy cycle (as well as the world of course). And will, of course, raise the statement made my John before he died that if Dean can't save Sammy, he will have to kill him. So Season 5 will be about stopping Lucifer while trying to save Sam, but with Dean constantly struggling with the knowledge that he really will have to kill Sam if he can't stop Lucifer.
I admit that there's a part of me that really likes this idea--mostly for Jared's sake. Jared's always said he wanted Sam to go evil and that he enjoyed playing evil!Sam. Just think of how he would love the challenge of portraying LUCIFER! In talking with fickleone, I've always wondered how SPN would pull off/cast/whatever the character of Lucifer. Kinda like casting a serious God (aka not a George Burns God.) Big shoes for any actor to fill.
What do you think? Thoughts?
Oh--and if you know for a fact that any of this is TRUE (i.e., spoilers), PLEASE DON'T TELL ME! Speculation is welcome, not spoilers.
